The web is expanding day by day and through new technologies there are a lot of websites that replace your locally installed tools. Here is a list of 10 useful Websites for everyone that you definitely should know about. It contains a broad variety of services, so there should be at least something for everyone.
1. If This Then That
“If This Then That” provides a platform to react to almost any event from a huge list of different services.
Let’s say for example, you want to turn on the lights at home when you are within 50 meters.
With ifttt.com you can create a new service that tracks your GPS signal and sends a command to your Philips Hue lights when you get close to home.
ifttt.com supports all major services to create individual commands for nearly everything you can imagine.
2. Youtube DJ – Music
Have you ever experienced the problem when you listen to music on Youtube and you like to start or search for a new song without interrupting the first one.
Youtube DJ gives you two DJ desks where you can add Youtube videos and even create playlists.
You can then create nice transitions from one song to another with the built-in functions. Additionally, all functions can be controlled via keyboard shortcuts.
3. Pixlr – Photo Editor
Pixlr is like an online version of Photoshop that gives you a lot of different functions.
You can create different layers, shapes, gradients, transparency and much more. It only requires Adobe Flash Player to be installed.
Additionally, there are a lot of different filter functions, like greyscale, noise and more.
4. Start.me – Start Page
Start.me provides you with an alternate homepage for your browser.
It allows you to create bookmarks, display recent news from different websites, show the weather and much more. You can also modify the design, like the number of columns, backgrounds and much more.
If you create an account, you can start to use it on all your devices. It has predefined pages with the favorite links for a lot of different countries.
Start.me is also available on mobile devices.
5. Makezine.com – DIY Instructions
On Makezine you can find do-it-yourself (DIY) instructions for a lot of different things from users all around the world.
Build your own chairs, learn about cooking, electronics and much more. There are detailed video instructions for all kind of things available on the website.
Alternatively, you can visit instructables.com if you want to find even more tutorials.
6. DeepL – Translator
DeepL is an online translator that is often considered more accurate than other translators like the one from Google.
You can click on a word and it gives you a description and alternatives that might sound better.
Currently it only supports a couple of languages but there will hopefully be more in the future.
7. Draw.io – Charts
Draw.io is an online tool to create different diagrams. There are a lot of templates for any kind of use.
You can create organigrams, flowcharts, network diagrams and more.
It is possible to save the created diagrams to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Github or to your local harddisk.
8. Have I been pwned? – Security
A lot of companies have been victims of cyber attacks and a lot of passwords were stolen from different websites.
On haveibeenpwned.com you can enter your email address and check if your account has been in one of those data breaches and it will tell you on which accounts (Twitter, Adobe etc.) you should change your password immediately.
It’s important, that you use different passwords for different accounts. If you don’t do that, more than only the accounts mentioned could be insecure. To ensure you use different passwords, you should install a password manager like KeePass.
9. GetHuman.com – Service
GetHuman is a site where you can insert a company’s name and find information how to get in contact with someone from the support.
It shows the average waiting time and what key combinations you need to press to talk to a human as fast as possible.
This site is very useful if you have a technical problem or your device is broken and you need to speak to someone.
10. Mega.nz – Cloud Storage
Mega.nz is a cloud storage provider that encrypts all your data, so not even they can read your data.
The advantage of mega.nz compared to Google Drive or OneDrive is the 50GB storage you get for free when you create an account.
You even have the possibility to test the service before you create an account.
